SPLIT | SCREEN
SAN JOSE, CA
Silicon Valley is known for striving to create connections, yet - as so often is the case - the connection is not physical. In one such office park, two identical office towers straddle a property line, isolated by zoning ordained setbacks. Split | Screen is a small landscape pavilion that reifies the property line fissure into an intimate gathering space, layering gaps, paths, surfaces, and structures into a dense but light web. Individual aluminum tubes, spaced apart for a 70% opening, align to form a floating plane above the horizon, animated by rapidly shifting - even blurring - relationships of shadow and light. This datum is fused by omission, the gaps of material subtracted and composed to form a connection out of the divide.
