HARVEY MILK PLAZA
SF, CA
Harvey Milk Plaza celebrates the life and legacy of Harvey Milk by elevating community, literally and figuratively, in a call to action: gather, march, revel, protest, converse, move, and reflect. A new vantage point rises at the historic heart of the LGBTQ community in the Castro, becoming a heightened platform, visible to all. This project frames the Plaza as an invitation to a more open form of community, intertwining 2 critical parts: The Elevated platform and The Procession. The Elevated Platform rises gradually, lifting a new enlarged Plaza from the tangle of passing circulation and imposing infrastructural constraints into a new public space that floats above the Castro Street horizon. The Procession activates all spaces within the Plaza. These accessible paths forge a conscious form of engagement through movement.
