BREEZY

HILLSBOROUGH, CA

LanBreezy Garden transforms an overgrown property corner into an inviting courtyard that recenters the living spaces around the outdoor areas. Anchored by a majestic 50-year-old Weeping Maple, the garden restores and highlights venerable existing plantings while an overlay of new landscape elements carves out new pathways and boundary conditions. The spatial organization draws upon a study of the sightlines between the new ADU and primary residence. Existing melaleuca trees maximize the bedrooms' privacy and line the walkway to a formal rear entry. Beyond the maple, chartreuse Lomandra tops a sharp dry-stacked stone wall on the periphery of a grassy plane, contrasting with dark green mondo grass clumping around large boulders. Delicate Dogwood trees float within dainty blooms of Japanese anemones and cape rush reeds at the around the Main House entrance, providing a subtle counterpoint to the drama of the existing tree. Stone pebbles, ferns, and grasses create a textural landscape for the tree’s twisting trunk and branches and the drape of lacy, serrated leaves that turn a brilliant red in fall.
